Let me tell you the story of a group of Buffistas And they got hit by the train, they got hit by the train, Betsy and her helpers built a mighty fortress, But they got hit by the train, they got hit by the train, Way down in the meadow, the guys had a party, Then they got hit by the train, they got hit by the train, Oh you loyal Buffistas, why do you keep on watching, So you'll get hit by the train, yet again and again, "The Big Angst Train" turns out to be a filk of a parody of a folk song that stole the tune of an earlier song. "M.T.A." is a parody of "The Wreck of the Old 97", which, in turn, used the tune from "The Ship That Never Returned." The lyrics for "M.T.A." were written by Jacqueline Steiner and Bess Hawes to be used as a campaign song for 1948 Boston mayoral candidate Walter A. O'Brien. The original recording of "M.T.A. by Will Holt caused a furor, because O'Brien was considered by many at the time to be a "commie pinko". The record was withdrawn. When the Kingston Trio recorded the song in the late 50's, they changed the name from Walter to George, just in case. (As a side note, the Old 97's are one of the house Buffista bands.)
